I agree, Rochelle, that teachers and students should work together to demonstrate what has been learned, and that teachers should both teach and facilitate their students' empowerment through learning skills.
Good summary - clear overview and detail. One interesting point was from chapter 7 when you stated that students need to learn to give reasons for viewpoints. This is an area that, as a high school teacher, I see students lacking in their writing. Most usually hit major points within a constructed response assignment, but then come up short when it concerns substantiation of their claims.
I could appreciate your summary as a former self-contained teacher who, honestly struggled making every topic in every subject personable. I think that forming an alliance (what I like to call it) with students makes the job so much easier. The teachers you mentioned found ways to make the lesson interesting and in some areas culturally relevant which was beneficial to students as well as the teacher.
Your chapter reminded me of Bruner who suggests that we learn as we are influenced by our surroundings. He believes that are environments as how we live have a direct impact on our learning. Thus, students relate best to what they are familiar with therefore, the educator is to help students to learn to build on their experiences.

ReplyDeleteGood correlation between music and mathematics literacy. Buying in to interests or cultures make it that much easier.
